The Swanson River Canoe Route lies north of the Swan Lake System and connects 40 lakes with 46 miles of the Swanson River. In total, the Swanson River Canoe Route forms a trail system of just over 80 miles in length. About 2,000 canoeists enter this system each year by way of Paddle Lake. About 18% of all visitors using either the Swan Lake or Swanson River Routes enter Paddle and go as far as Gene Lake, then return back to Paddle Lake.

Besides the lakes directly connected by portages and waterways, this area, along with the Swan Lake system, contains thousands of other lakes which are seldom explored or even seen.
